Jos Eduardo Costas, Embraer Vice President, Marketing and Sales said It is with great satisfaction that we announce the certification of this outstanding aircraft, reinforcing Embraer s commitment to the Australian market. Our customers will have the convenience of being able to register their Phenom 100s in Australia. It was in 1985 when Embraer announced that they were to build a revolutionary business jet that would have cutting edge performance yet would be docile to fly offering premium comfort and low operating costs. The Phenom met all of Embraer s original specification targets and went further to surpass several other performance goals. One of these has left the Phenom with a 10 knot higher cruising speed than originally promised at 390 knots yet with a fuel consumption some 3.6 5 better than estimated. Externally noise levels are lower than ICAO (International Civil Aviation Authority) Stage IV requirements and take off and climb performance is better than forecast. Scheduled maintenance needs have been cut too. There is along interval of 600 FH or twelve months between service schedules which gives the Phenom a huge advantage over some of its rivals. The baggage bay is the biggest in the industry at 53 cubic feet or just over 1500 litres. There are more than 800 aircraft from the Phenom private jet line which includes the Phenom 300 light jet, on order throughout the world. In concept, VLJ’s sem like the simple answer to the normally expensive nature of private charter jet service. They are cheap to buy (many being sold for under $2 million), cheap to operate and have a fairly decent range (over 1000 nm). So why haven’t they worked? Why isn’t air taxi service the new trend in mid-range air travel?

The basic answer is it’s still not cost effective and the normally standard amenities of a “business jet” are absent in a VLJ. The quick shutdown of DayJet LLC in Florida is a great example of the inability of the “air taxi” concept to make money. DayJet claimed they needed an additional profit of 40 million to stay in business. The soaring price of jet fuel (sometimes as high as $9/gallon) is also a major stumbling block to many pilots and Air taxi companies.

vlj aircraftWith regard to amenities, the VLJ’s are lacking. VLJ’s usually have no bathroom. If they do it’s usually covered by a curtain or is called an “emergency toilet”. I know for sure that I don’t want to use or watch someone use an emergency bathroom while on a 3 hour flight. Small cabins and lack of galley are other missing amenities that some business travelers cannot overlook.

Another major concern is safety. The biggest safety difference is that VLJ’s are only built to hold 1 pilot. If the pilot has any problems in the air, the whole aircraft has problems. How many business travelers are willing to take that risk.

VLJ’s are not the answer. The business jet market will probably stay out of reach for the everyday business traveler. With the number of newly rich coming on daily, the business jet market will see plenty of opportunity in it’s current market. Market expansion for the private jet market does not currently seem like a feasible opportunity.

So what about the opposite view?We include here a video on the Cessna Citation Mustang Very Light Jet (VLJ) to see what all the fuss is about.

In that respect the expectations have been met, said Cyrus Sigari, co-owner of JetAVIVA, a very light jet brokerage and services firm in Van Nuys. “It is still cool to own a VLJ,” Sigari said.

VLJSVery Light Jets
The very light jet or VLJ will be much cheaper, than private jets before. That`s why private aircraft charter will be affordable to a much wider range of clients in the future.
