Looking for a jet that has a little bit more to offer then try the Legacy, Embraer’s super mid-size corporate executive jet. It offers a little more than many private business jets and is a leader in it’s class.
It’s derived from the ERJ-135 and ERJ-145 commercial regional jetliners, with the Legacy Corporate Shuttle configured with up to 19 seats compared with the Legacy Executive which boasts up to 15 seats.
Embraer first launched the Legacy programme at Farnborough Air Show in the UK in July 2000. From there its maiden flight took place less than one year later in April 2001. Two Legacy jets began operations with Indigo in March 2003.
There are now over 130 Legacy aircraft in operation in 23 countries. Over half of these are the Legacy 600 executive type the rest are the shuttle version. The Indian Airforce use five aircraft for VIP transport. Other orders placed in 2007 include two Legacy 600 executive jets for an oil company in China, Sonago International Holding
The legacy gained type certification from Brazilian CTA in December 2001, from the European Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) in July 2002, from the USA Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in September 2002. Certification was granted by Russian and CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) Interstate Aviation Committee in November 2003. In 2004 the CTA and FAA granted authorisation to take of and land at airfields up to 8500ft above sea level
Two new models were added to the Legacy stable in 2008. The Legacy 450 will enter service in 2013 and the midsize legacy 500 will follow in 2012. The Legacy 450 will have a range of 2200nm with eight passengers a little further with less. The 500 version will cover 2800nm with eight passengers on board. Power is provided by Honeywell HTF7500E engines.
Final assembly of the Legacy, systems integration and testing are carried out at Embraer’s aircraft manufacturing facilities in Sao Paulo with some parts and assemblies being subcontracted. Norton supplies the nose radome, Sonaca of Belgium the rear and centre section of the fuselage, Gamesa of Spain the wings, and ENAER of Chile the fin and tailplane.
May 2004 saw Embraer announce improvements to the executive version, including aerodynamic and fuel system improvements. The introduction of more powerful Rolls-Royce AE3007-A1E engines has helped raise the operational ceiling for the Legacy to 12,500m (41,000ft). The new capability is available as an upgrade to Legacy owners.
