As the recession continues apparently unabated despite billions of dollars being poured into failing worldwide economies the private jet for sale market continues to run into turbulence.
Business jet sales are being slaughtered by the continuing slump in the global economy, we take a look at whats going on.
There are those who forecast a very long recovery for the private jet industry. There was a time when a millionaire had only to produce 10% deposit to buy his own private jet but these days are long gone.
The slump in the jet market is not helped by the fact that it is no longer politically correct for large companies that have been bailed out by governments having their executives travelling by private jet.
The General Aviation manufacturers association say that deliveries of business jets have dropped more than a third in the first quarter of 2009 and their forecast for 2010 is not good. Aviation consultant Brain Foley from ‘Private Jet Daily’ said “We don’t see the number of deliveries even hitting 2008’s level in the next 10 years”
Experts seem to differ in agreement that manufacturers will receive more cancellations from buyers as confidence in early recovery continues to be low.
According to ‘Private Jet Makers’ the charter jet industry is just being maligned by the media and when the feeding frenzy is over things will bounce back to normal. But who knows what is ‘normal’ in this new financial climate, it seems that whoever is right there is no sign of the market improving anytime soon.
The good news for perspective buyers still looking to buy a private jet plane is that the glut in the Market with so many used business jet planes sitting on the tarmacs around the world is that it is a buyers market. Just take a look at the private jet ads and you see immediately that prices are being cut almost monthly as owners seek to unburden their embarrassing liability.
It may also be that the emerging economies will lead the way as the world economy continues its merry go round maybe its someone else turn to take the lead in private jet ownership.

In concept, VLJ’s sem like the simple answer to the normally expensive nature of private charter jet service. They are cheap to buy (many being sold for under $2 million), cheap to operate and have a fairly decent range (over 1000 nm). So why haven’t they worked? Why isn’t air taxi service the new trend in mid-range air travel?
The basic answer is it’s still not cost effective and the normally standard amenities of a “business jet” are absent in a VLJ. The quick shutdown of DayJet LLC in Florida is a great example of the inability of the “air taxi” concept to make money. DayJet claimed they needed an additional profit of 40 million to stay in business. The soaring price of jet fuel (sometimes as high as $9/gallon) is also a major stumbling block to many pilots and Air taxi companies.
With regard to amenities, the VLJ’s are lacking. VLJ’s usually have no bathroom. If they do it’s usually covered by a curtain or is called an “emergency toilet”. I know for sure that I don’t want to use or watch someone use an emergency bathroom while on a 3 hour flight. Small cabins and lack of galley are other missing amenities that some business travelers cannot overlook.
Another major concern is safety. The biggest safety difference is that VLJ’s are only built to hold 1 pilot. If the pilot has any problems in the air, the whole aircraft has problems. How many business travelers are willing to take that risk.
VLJ’s are not the answer. The business jet market will probably stay out of reach for the everyday business traveler. With the number of newly rich coming on daily, the business jet market will see plenty of opportunity in it’s current market. Market expansion for the private jet market does not currently seem like a feasible opportunity.

The former borders chief is to be questioned by MPs amid new claims passports for people on private jets were not checked. Brodie Clark, who resigned last week after a 40-year career at the Home Office, will appear before the Home Affairs Committee. Mr Clark is expected to say he only acted to relax border checks because he was required to do so by police to stop overcrowding. His appearance comes after a UK Border Agency (UKBA) official leaked emails claiming some passengers arriving on private charter flights did not face any passport or customs checks. The official, working at Durham Tees Airport, voiced concerns to management at the UKBA that his staff did not even see some of the passengers. He was told the “no-checks policy” was part of a “new national General Aviation Strategy being rolled out” and that the policy at his airport was “consistent with national policy”. The whistleblower wrote: “As we are not allowed to physically see the passengers… we have no way of checking whether the handling agent information is correct or even if the number of people arriving matches the number we have been advised. “It is creating a situation where we are not able to secure the borders as robustly as we would like to, for no justifiable reason.” The apparent relaxation seemed to be an attempt to tackle the volume of passengers going through checks.
